A new set of Beijing Intellectual Property Rights Protection Regulations was passed during the city's legislative session on Thursday. The regulations will come into effect on July 1.

According to the regulations, city authorities will support the intellectual property (IP) rights protection of strategic emerging industries, such as new materials, new energy, and aerospace. These industries will enjoy accelerated review of their IP.

Beijing will also support enterprises, universities, and research institutions to explore IP management and protection in the fields of mobile internet, big data, artificial intelligence, and other new technologies and new types of business, according to the regulations.

The regulations also set the responsibilities of protecting IP upon internet service providers, requiring them to enact protocols to prevent and address IP infringement.

The regulations also highlight penalties on malicious trademark registrations, infringement of exclusive right to registered trademarks, and other illegal activities regarding IP.
